Haifa Interdisciplinary Unit for Polish Studies

- The Haifa Interdisciplinary Unit for Polish Studies (HIUPS) was inaugurated with a great ceremony on November 28, 2022.
- Our goal is to create an interdisciplinary center that would help propagate general knowledge about Poland, its history, culture, economics, politics, society, and more.
- The unit offers a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary courses about Poland in various contexts and a research program in pre-modern and contemporary Polish history, literature, culture, art, political thought, economics, for graduate students from different departments.
- We are cooperating with different organizations in order to implement joint Polish-Israeli scientific projects and supports the academic exchange of students and faculty members.
- We organize academic conferences and guest lectures, as well as cultural events open to the general public. It offers Polish language courses at several levels of proficiency.
- The unit also offers a limited number of scholarships and research grants for outstanding graduate students and postdocs, who conduct high-quality scientific research related to the Polish context.
In Memory of Alex Dancyg
The Haifa Interdisciplinary Unit for Polish Studies mourns the loss of Alex Dancyg, a Polish-born Israeli Holocaust historian who was brutally abducted by Hamas on 7 October 2023 and held hostage.
Dancyg was a dedicated advocate for Polish-Israeli dialogue. In 1990, he began working with Yad Vashem, preparing tour guides for Israeli groups visiting Poland. His role at Yad Vashem also involved lecturing and engaging with educators and students from both Poland and Israel. Dancyg spearheaded a program that facilitated meetings between pupils from 120 Israeli and Polish schools during Israeli school trips to Poland. He was a long-time associate of the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Institute.
For his educational contributions, Dancyg received several accolades, including: The National Education Commission award, the highest honor from the Polish Education Ministry, The Silver Cross of Merit from former Polish President Lech Kaczyński, The Eudoxja Rakowska Prize from the Polcul Foundation in 2013 for "his long-standing activity in historical education of Israeli and Polish youth", the title "Man of Reconciliation" from the Polish Council of Christians and Jews in 2023, awarded while he was held hostage by Hamas.
